Warmlines

Warmlines are telephone-based support services that provide non-crisis emotional support and assistance to individuals experiencing distress and loneliness or who simply need to talk to someone. Unlike crisis hotlines, warmlines are intended for individuals who are not in immediate danger but would benefit from a friendly and empathetic conversation. They are typically staffed by trained peer support specialists who have their own lived experience with mental health challenges.
The role of Warmlines in the lived experience movement is to provide a supportive and understanding space for individuals with mental health challenges to connect with others who have had similar experiences. These services play several vital roles:
-
Peer Support: Warmlines are often staffed by individuals who have experienced mental health challenges, allowing callers to speak to someone who can empathise with and relate to their feelings and struggles.
-
Non-Crisis Support: Warmlines allow individuals to seek support and emotional connection without the urgency of a crisis. Callers can reach out for a chat or to discuss their concerns without feeling pressured to undergo immediate intervention.
-
Reduction of Isolation: Many people with mental health challenges may feel isolated or disconnected from others. Warmlines provide an opportunity for meaningful conversations and help combat feelings of loneliness.
-
Validation and Understanding: Callers can share their experiences and emotions with peers who understand the impact of mental health challenges, fostering validation and empathy.
-
Prevention and Early Intervention: By offering a space for individuals to talk about their concerns, warmlines can provide early intervention and prevent crises from escalating.
-
Community Building: Warmlines contribute to developing a supportive mental health community where individuals can reach out to others who have navigated similar challenges.
-
Recovery-Oriented Support: Warmlines are part of a recovery-oriented approach to mental health, emphasising self-help and connection with others who have found effective ways to manage their mental health.
-
Resource Referral: Although not crisis lines, warmlines can provide resource information and referrals to other supportive services as needed.
Warmlines complement other mental health services by providing an accessible and compassionate support option for individuals who may not be in immediate crisis but still need someone to talk to. They play an essential role in the lived experience movement by demonstrating the power of peer support and promoting the idea that individuals with lived experience can provide meaningful support to their peers on their recovery journey.

The Befrienders Worldwide is an international network of helplines and support services operating in multiple countries, providing free, confidential emotional support and suicide prevention through trained volunteers. It acts as a global directory and network, helping people connect to local helplines in their country, all focused on listening, emotional support, and reducing isolation.

The Helplines Partnership is a United Kingdom–based membership and accreditation body that supports and represents helpline services, helping improve quality, standards, and best practice across the sector rather than providing direct emotional support. t works behind the scenes to strengthen helplines through training, accreditation, and collaboration, ensuring services are safe, effective, and accessible.

Suicide Prevention Helpline Directory (India)
The Suicide Prevention Helpline Directory (India) is an India-based resource that compiles and lists multiple suicide prevention and emotional support helplines across the country, helping individuals quickly find appropriate support services in their region. It functions as a central access point, guiding people to local crisis lines, NGOs, and support services, making mental health support more accessible across India.
The Lived Experience Hub have mapped 117 warm lines globally, revealing a distributed yet structurally consistent layer of peer-led support embedded across multiple countries. Despite geographic variation, these services share a common operational architecture—non-crisis emotional support delivered by trained peers, typically via phone, with comparable staffing models, training requirements, and service delivery frameworks.
This structural alignment makes warmlines uniquely suited to globalisation. Through the implementation of a universal ledger, warmline activity could be standardised and aggregated in real time, capturing key metrics such as call volume, engagement duration, response times, and outcome indicators. A centralised global dashboard could then provide a live overview of warmline activity worldwide—transforming isolated services into a coordinated global support system. In doing so, warmlines evolve from local interventions into a measurable, optimisable, and scalable planetary infrastructure for early mental health support.
