Mad Studies

Returning Book to Shelf

Mad Studies is an emerging academic field and social movement that challenges traditional psychiatric perspectives and seeks to understand the experiences of individuals who have been labelled as "mad" or "mentally ill" from a critical and social justice-oriented standpoint. This website will explore the movement and its major stakeholders and who contribute to making it a worthwhile addition to the lived experience movement.

Mad Studies is an interdisciplinary field of scholarship and activism that focuses on the experiences and perspectives of individuals who identify as "mad" or have been labelled with mental health conditions or psychiatric disabilities. It challenges traditional psychiatric and medical models of mental health and illness and aims to centre the voices and narratives of those with lived experiences. Some activists and scholars use the term "mad" to reclaim and redefine their experiences, challenging stigmatising language and societal attitudes.

Mad Studies examines various aspects of mental health, encompassing social, cultural, historical, and political dimensions. It aims to understand mental distress within broader social contexts and highlights the influence of power dynamics, social inequality, and discrimination in shaping mental health experiences. The field seeks to challenge the dominant narratives surrounding mental health, which are often constructed from the perspective of mental health professionals and the medical establishment.

The Mad Studies movement represents a growing field within the lived experience movement, bringing lived experience into academia as a legitimate and critical form of knowledge. It explores complex social, cultural, and political dimensions of mental health, while reclaiming the term “mad” as an identity grounded in rights, resistance, and empowerment. As an academic discipline in its own right, Mad Studies spans institutions across Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada, contributing to research, education, and system transformation
