Moistening Body Hair

The state of the hair, including body hair, is believed to reflect the health of the lungs. The lungs are crucial in distributing fluids throughout the body, including to the skin and hair. In TCM, the lungs govern the respiratory system and the circulation of qi (vital energy) and fluids throughout the body. They play a crucial role in receiving and dispersing fluids obtained from the spleen.

  • Receiving Fluids from the Spleen: The spleen transforms and transports food and fluids. It extracts the usable part of food essences and directs them to various body parts, including the lungs.

  • Distribution to the Skin and Hair: Once the lungs receive fluids from the spleen, they distribute them throughout the body, including to the skin and hair. Proper nourishment and moisture from these fluids help to keep the skin and hair healthy and vibrant.

  • Nourishment of Body Hair: Body hair, like the skin, benefits from the nourishing and moisturising effects of the fluids distributed by the lungs. Healthy body hair is often seen as a reflection of good lung health and overall vitality.

By maintaining the health of the lungs and supporting their functions, individuals can promote the health of their skin and body hair. This includes practices such as proper breathing techniques, a balanced diet that supports lung health, staying hydrated, and addressing any imbalances or deficiencies through TCM therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary adjustments.

Nourishing and Moistening the Skin

The skin is a vital organ that reflects the body's internal health. It is nourished and moistened through the actions of various organs, particularly the lungs and spleen. The lungs and spleen work together to ensure that fluids are distributed throughout the body, including to the skin. The lungs receive fluids from the spleen and spread them to the skin and the space between the skin and muscles. This nourishment and moisture help to keep the skin healthy and vibrant.

  • Lustre of the Skin: Proper nourishment and moisture contribute to the lustre or radiance of the skin. When the skin is well-hydrated and nourished, it appears healthy, smooth, and glowing.

  • Opening and Closing of Pores: The skin's pores are considered the "doors of qi" in TCM. They regulate the exchange of energy (qi) and fluids between the body and the external environment. Proper nourishment and moisture help to keep the pores functioning optimally, allowing them to open and close as needed.

  • Regulation of Sweating: Sweating is essential for regulating body temperature and eliminating toxins. Healthy skin helps to regulate sweating effectively, preventing excessive or insufficient sweating, which can indicate imbalances in the body.

  • Circulation of Defensive Qi: The skin plays a crucial role in the body's defence against external pathogens (pathogenic factors). A healthy skin barrier, supported by proper nourishment and moisture, helps to prevent the entry of harmful pathogens into the body, thereby supporting the immune system.

Nourishing and moistening the skin are essential for maintaining its health and function. In TCM, individuals can promote optimal skin function and overall well-being by supporting the health of the lungs, spleen, and other organs involved in skin health. This includes following a balanced diet, staying hydrated, practising good skincare habits, and addressing any underlying imbalances through TCM therapies.
