Rather than labelling “cancer” as a singular disease, TCM sees it as a syndrome of multiple interacting imbalances, a result of chronic disruption to normal Qi-Blood-Fluid movement and deeply influenced by emotions, lifestyle, constitution, and environmental toxins. Thus, treatment is highly individualized, based on type and location of the tumour, root pattern (Ben) and branch symptoms (Biao) and the stage of illness and Western treatment phase.

In TCM Oncology, cancer is seen not as one disease, but as the end result of several overlapping pathological patterns, primarily:

  1. Qi stagnation and Blood stasis → poor circulation, mass formation

  2. Phlegm and Damp → nodules, cysts, tumours

  3. Heat toxin accumulation → inflammation, ulceration, rapid tumour growth.

  4. Essence (Jing) deficiency → lowered immunity and systemic decline

  5. Emotional stagnation → Liver Qi constraint disrupting organ function and immunity.

By identifying and treating these patterns holistically, TCM supports cancer care through detoxification, strengthening, emotional regulation, and restoring balance, often in conjunction with biomedical treatment.

TCM Oncology offers a rich, holistic framework to support cancer patients at all stages by strengthening Zheng Qi and organ function, addressing root imbalances like Qi deficiency, Phlegm, and Blood stasis, clearing Heat toxins and resolving accumulations, relieving symptoms, improving quality of life, and reducing side effects and integrating spiritual and emotional care for the whole person. It is not a substitute for conventional cancer care but is an increasingly respected adjunct therapy, particularly in integrative oncology clinics worldwide.

  • When Qi does not flow smoothly, Blood cannot circulate properly.

  • Over time, this stagnation causes localised masses, lumps, pain, and eventually tumour formation.

  • Fixed, stabbing pain.

  • Dark or purplish complexion or tongue

  • Masses that are hard and immobile

  • Choppy or wiry pulse

Liver (Qi stagnation), Uterus, Breast, Stomach, Colon

Move Qi and Blood, break stasis, soften masses.

Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis
(气滞血瘀)

  • Weak Spleen Qi fails to transform fluids → Dampness → Phlegm.

  • Phlegm may obstruct meridians and lodge in tissues → nodules, cysts, tumours

  • Soft, rubbery, or movable masses

  • Heaviness, fatigue, poor digestion

  • Greasy tongue coat, slippery pulse

Thyroid, breast, lymphatic, ovarian

Strengthen Spleen, transform Phlegm, drain Damp.

TCM Oncology

TCM Oncology (中医肿瘤学) is the branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine dedicated to the prevention, supportive treatment, and holistic management of cancer and tumour-related conditions. It integrates classical Chinese medicine principles with modern clinical practice to strengthen the body's resistance (Zheng Qi 正气), alleviate side effects of conventional treatments (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery), improve quality of life and recovery, and reduce recurrence and prolong survival. While TCM oncology does not replace Western oncology, it offers powerful complementary therapies rooted in individualised diagnosis and pattern differentiation (辨证论治). It aims to treat the person as a whole, not just the tumour. Cancer is not a single entity in TCM, but rather the result of various pathological patterns, such as:

  • Internal or external Heat toxins invade and accumulate in tissues.

  • Leads to rapidly growing, inflamed, ulcerated, or painful tumours

  • Red, swollen, painful masses.

  • Infection, abscess, high fever

  • Yellow tongue coat, rapid pulse

Skin, throat, lung, breast, leukemia, or any ulcerative/inflammatory type

Clear Heat, resolve toxins, cool Blood.

Toxin Accumulation (热毒瘀结 / 毒邪内蕴)

  • Chronic illness, aging, overwork, or inherited weakness depletes Kidney Jing (Essence)

  • Weak Jing → poor cellular repair → lowered immune defense → tumour formation

  • Fatigue, dizziness, tinnitus

  • Weak back and knees

  • Poor memory, premature aging

  • Red or peeled tongue, thin pulse

Elderly cancer patients. Long-term cancer survivors with constitutional weakness

Tonify Kidney Jing and Essence, support Marrow

Essence (Jing) Depletion
(精亏)

  • Unresolved emotional trauma (grief, anger, frustration) leads to Qi stagnation, especially in the Liver.

  • This impairs Blood circulation and digestion, allowing Phlegm, Damp, and stasis to accumulate

  • Irritability, mood swings, sighing

  • Irregular digestion, PMS, chest, or abdominal distension

  • Wiry pulse, red sides of the tongue

Breast, uterine, pancreatic, liver

Soothe the Liver, move Qi, regulate emotions.
