TCM Gynaecology treats women’s health holistically, addressing not only reproductive function but the emotional and energetic aspects of female physiology. Its strength lies in its ability to identify the root imbalance (deficiency, excess, stagnation, or obstruction), tailor treatment to each phase of a woman’s life and cycle and integrate emotional, physical, and hormonal support.

  • TCM supports healthy pregnancy by calming the foetus (安胎), strengthening Qi, and treating common issues (nausea, back pain, edema).

  • During childbirth, acupuncture and moxa can assist labour or correct malposition (e.g. moxa at BL67 for breech).

  • Postpartum care (产后调养) is crucial — this is the “Golden Month” (坐月子), where Qi and Blood must be rebuilt.

Tonify Blood and Qi, harmonize Chong/Ren, ensure lactation, prevent postpartum disorders like depression, or prolapse.

Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Postpartum Recovery

Habitual miscarriage is seen as a result of:

  • Kidney deficiency (especially Yang or Essence)

  • Spleen Qi deficiency (unable to hold foetus)

  • Blood Heat or Liver Qi constraint leading to instability.

  • Trauma or overexertion

Tonify and stabilize Kidney and Spleen, calm foetus, clear Heat if needed. Use points like KI3, ST36, SP6 cautiously, and herbs like Shou Tai Wan.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), gynaecology (中医妇科, zhōng yī fù kē) is a major clinical specialty that focuses on the unique physiology, pathology, and treatment of women throughout all stages of life. TCM gynaecology is highly developed and has been practiced for over two thousand years, with a rich tradition of pattern differentiation, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and lifestyle support specifically tailored to female reproductive health. TCM gynaecology addresses conditions related to:

Includes disorders such as:

  • Irregular cycles (月经不调) – often due to Liver Qi stagnation, Blood deficiency, or Cold in the uterus

  • Dysmenorrhea (痛经) – usually caused by Qi and Blood stasis, Cold obstruction, or Liver Qi stagnation.

  • Amenorrhea (闭经) – often from Blood deficiency, Kidney deficiency, or Blood stasis

  • Menorrhagia (崩漏) – typically due to Spleen Qi deficiency, Heat in the Blood, or Blood stasis

PMS (经前综合征) – related to Liver Qi stagnation, Phlegm, or Spleen deficiency with Damp

Regulate Chong and Ren, move Qi and Blood, tonify where deficient, clear Cold/Heat as needed.

Menstruation

Infertility in TCM is not a diagnosis but a result of underlying imbalance, such as:

  • Kidney Jing deficiency (congenital or chronic depletion)

  • Liver Qi stagnation (affecting ovulation or implantation)

  • Phlegm-Damp accumulation (blocking uterus or tubes)

  • Cold in the uterus (hindering implantation)

Tonify Kidney, regulate Liver, resolve Phlegm, warm the womb, support ovulation and luteal phase with cycle-based treatment.

Fertility and Conception

Seen primarily as Kidney Yin deficiency with rising Yang or Fire, though can involve Liver, Heart, and Spleen as well.

  • Symptoms: hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, irritability, dryness, anxiety

Nourish Kidney Yin, anchor Yang, calm the Shen, support Heart-Kidney axis

Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan, Er Xian Tang, and Zuo Gui Wan are commonly used formulas.

Menopause and Perimenopausal Syndromes

Conditions like:

  • Mastitis, fibrocystic breasts, insufficient lactation, breast distention (PMS-related)

Often due to:

  • Liver Qi stagnation, Phlegm, Heat, or Qi and Blood stasis

Move Liver Qi, clear Phlegm/Heat, unblock channels of the Stomach and Liver meridians (which run through the breast)

Breast Health

Includes:

  • Fibroids (子宫肌瘤) – usually due to Qi and Blood stasis, Damp-Phlegm, or Cold

  • Endometriosis (子宫内膜异位症) – Blood stasis, often with Heat or Cold obstruction

  • Leukorrhea (带下) – Damp-Heat, Spleen Qi deficiency, or Kidney Yang deficiency

Move Blood, resolve Damp or Phlegm, warm the uterus if Cold, nourish if deficient.

Uterine Conditions

Women are particularly sensitive to Liver Qi stagnation, which affects mood, cycles, and digestion.

  • Emotional symptoms: irritability, sadness, depression, anxiety, especially linked to cycle.

  • Hormonal dysregulation: irregular menses, anovulation, PCOS, thyroid disorders

Harmonize Liver and Spleen, tonify Kidney Yin or Yang, regulate Chong/Ren, calm the Shen
