TCM Licensure & Legal Info by Region

The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is the largest professional body for traditional acupuncturists in the UK. While it does not issue official government licensure, it acts as the main regulatory and representative body for practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture, offering a form of voluntary professional registration and ensuring high clinical and ethical standards.

In Germany, the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) — including acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other therapies — is legally governed under the umbrella of the Heilpraktiker Law (Heilpraktikergesetz). This law provides a unique regulatory framework that permits non-medical practitioners (Heilpraktiker) to legally diagnose and treat patients using a wide range of therapies, including TCM.

Heilpraktiker Law (TCM within scope)

In the United States, the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) — including acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and related modalities — is regulated at the state level, not federally. However, the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) plays a central national role in standardizing certification and supporting state licensure requirements.

NCCAOM / state boards

In Canada, the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture is regulated at the provincial level, not federally. Each province that regulates TCM has a regulatory college, such as the CTCMPAO in Ontario, which provides legal licensure, practice standards, and regulatory oversight.

Ethnomedicine & Global Integration with TCM

The Traditional Medicine Portal of the World Health Organization (WHO) is an online information hub developed to support the global integration, regulation, and evidence-based use of traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM). It serves as a central access point for authoritative resources, data, policies, and research related to traditional medicine systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, Unani, African traditional medicine, and others.

The JCM Intercultural Medicine Articles refer to a series of published essays, reflections, and academic papers featured in the Journal of Chinese Medicine (JCM) that focus on the cross-cultural, philosophical, and clinical translation of Chinese medicine in the modern and Western world.

The Oxford Handbook of Global Complementary Medicine is a scholarly reference work published by Oxford University Press that explores the global landscape of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, Unani, homeopathy, and other indigenous and non-Western healing systems.

The CEU: TCM + Ayurveda courses on Net of Knowledge are continuing education (CEU/CPD) programs that focus on the integration and comparative study of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system of India. These courses are part of the growing trend in cross-disciplinary learning for licensed practitioners of acupuncture, Chinese medicine, naturopathy, and integrative health.
