TCM Paediatrics

TCM Paediatrics

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Paediatrics (中医儿科, Zhōng yī ér kē) is a specialized branch focused on treating infants and children from birth through adolescence. It applies core TCM principles—such as Yin-Yang, Qi, Blood, Zang-Fu organ theory, meridians, and pattern differentiation (辨证论治)—to the unique physiology and pathology of children, who are seen as fundamentally different from adults in their development, immunity, and vulnerability. Common Conditions Treated in TCM Paediatrics include:

  • Digestive disorders: colic, vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite, food retention

  • Respiratory issues: cough, asthma, recurrent colds, tonsillitis

  • Fevers and infectious diseases: acute febrile illness, ear infections

  • Skin conditions: eczema, hives, diaper rash

  • Neurological/behavioural: ADHD, night terrors, tics, developmental delay

  • Urinary problems: enuresis (bedwetting), urinary tract infections

  • Sleep disturbances: insomnia, restlessness, nightmares.

  • Growth issues: slow growth, fatigue, anaemia, constitutional weakness

In diagnostics, Pulse diagnosis may be difficult, especially in infants. Tongue diagnosis, abdominal palpation, and observation (crying, face colour, activity level) are key. In babies, the “Three Gate Vein” diagnosis (关脉诊) is used, in which the venule on the index finger is assessed to determine severity and location of disease.

TCM Paediatrics is a gentle, effective, and holistic approach to child health, emphasizing the immature but vital nature of children’s Qi, the importance of Spleen, Lung, and Kidney function in development and immunity, the use of herbs, acupuncture, paediatric tuina, and dietary guidance tailored to children and early intervention, prevention, and nurturing the child’s constitution (体质). This specialty is especially valued for recurrent or chronic conditions, for children sensitive to medication, or as an adjunct to Western paediatric care.
